SAT Math Tips by MathBug

  • Here are a few tips that have helped my students. You may find some more useful than others.

  1. Underline/Circle information given and problem to be solved.
  2. Avoid missing negative signs of integers.
  3. Properties of Exponents
  4. Absolute values and Inequalities and their graphs.
  5. Remember the 3 formulas-Difference of Squares, Squaring of (a+b) and (a-b) instead of FOIL.
  6. Graphs of Functions – reflection over x and y axes
  7. Transformations
  8. y= f(x) is ordered pair(x, y)
  9. Geometry – Parallel lines and angles, Special Right triangles, Similar Triangles.
  10. Properties of figures – square, rhombus, triangle, rectangle, kite, parallelogram, circles, solids.
  11. Draw lines in figures to get a familiar pattern or shape.
  12. Coordinate Geometry – Slopes(Parallel and Perpendicular), x intercept(x,0)(also called roots, zeros/solutions) and y intercept(0,y)
  13. Slope=rise/run=y2-y1/x2-x1
  14. Point Slope and Intercept Forms  of equation of lines(Linear Functions)
  15. Direct(line passes through origin)and Indirect Variation(graph is hyperbola)
